FELIX MERCER MOSS
THE ART VOYEUR

04 Oct-07 Oct

People have always loved viewing works of art. But where do people look while viewing a painting? Where do they not look? Do different people look at the same or different things?

The Art Voyeur is a conceptual project that uses real eye tracking data to visually explore these questions.

Eyes do not move smoothly around the visual world; instead they employ a series of jerky motions, between which they lock on to places the brain finds interesting. While somebody views a picture such as a piece of art, these ‘points of interest’ can be identified using special eye tracking equipment. It is these points of interest that have been used to create each piece in the project.

Each piece is composed of a series of columns, each representing the visual path taken by an observer while viewing an original painting. The columns are arranged from left to right according to how much the observers enjoyed viewing the original piece. On some of the pieces there are two blocks of columns: the left block represents female viewers while the right block represents male viewers.

The show provides the opportunity to glimpse through the eyes of others while contemplating the relationship between how we view a painting and our appreciation for it.
